Community Update : Week of june 24, 2019

At LESD,  every financial decision is made with our students in mind, and is directly connected to achieving our four district goals:

    • Increase Academic Achievement

    • Ensure Access & Equity

    • Improve Parent & Student Engagement

    • Provide 21st Century Learning Environments

Maintaining a healthy budget is essential to achieving our goals. At the Thursday June 13th Board of Trustees meeting, Monique Benjamin, Director of Accounting and Budgeting, presented an overview of the preliminary budget for the  2019-20 school year. Ms. Benjamin detailed Governor Newsom’s proposed 2019-20 budget, which commits $71 billion for K-12 education statewide and includes a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) of 3.26%. Additionally, proposals include funding for special education, early childhood education, and relief in contributions for increasing school district costs to support the pension programs for certificated (CalSTRS) and classified (CalPERS) staff.

While the news of the Governor’s proposed budget is promising, we will continue to exercise the same prudence that has allowed our district to remain financially solvent over the years and maintain solid reserves. A school district’s budget is a record of our past decisions and a financial roadmap for the future. At LESD we are committed to a secure and stable budget  that keeps students at the center of every decision we make.
