Technology, Robotics, Engineering, and Coding

The Lawndale Technology, Robotics, Engineering, and Coding (TREC) Program gives Lawndale students the tools to acquire the technology skills needed for success in today’s world! From hands-on engineering challenges to coding robots, students explore technology, build with various materials, and dive into California Computer Science Standards—all while solving real-world problems and having fun!

Elementary Schools 

  • Classrooms visit Makerspace 
  • Schools arrange fun and educational STEAM events
  • Digital arts & coding are offered in our RAP before and after school program

Middle Schools

  • Students have the opportunity to take the Computer Programming elective course
  • Weekly STEAM activities are hosted at the 21st Century Learning Media Center during lunch
  • TREC is integrated into the English Language Development program
  • Schools arrange fun and educational STEAM Nights

Our first joint Makerspace Family Night, supported by the Lawndale Technology, Robotics, Engineering, and Coding (TREC) Program, was hosted at Mitchell. The TREC Program gives Lawndale students the tools to acquire the technology skills needed for success in today’s world!

This year’s FIRST LEGO League final on March 26 between Addams and Rogers showcased incredible problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork as students tackled exciting engineering and coding challenges.

On February 28, students at Will Rogers Middle School participated in the Science Olympiad at Rio Hondo College, competing against other schools in a range of challenging science events.

Our 21st Century Learning Team recently hosted its first joint Family Makerspace Nights at Mark Twain Elementary and Lucille J. Smith Elementary, open to families district-wide. Families enjoyed a fun, hands-on evening exploring Makerspace activities like Lego BricQ, Dash Robots, Makey Makey, Coding, and more!

On April 17, our highly anticipated First LEGO League Challenge took place, showcasing the hard work and creativity of students from Ms. Peracha’s class at Will Rogers Middle School and Mr. Bedor’s class at Jane Addams Middle School. After months of preparation, the students finally had the opportunity to put their skills to the test in a friendly yet competitive environment.

Mark Friedman from the Los Angeles Maritime Institute visited both Will Rogers and Jane Addams Middle Schools, engaging 8th-grade students in their Period 4 computer programming/TREC class. These students are participating in the First Lego League Challenge, where they apply STEM skills to solve real-world problems.

At our middle schools, English Language Development (ELD) students are stepping into a world of innovation and discovery as they explore STEM through engaging activities in our media centers. These coordinated efforts are designed to enhance both their STEM knowledge and their language development, equipping them with vital skills for academic and personal success.

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) challenge has officially launched at Will Rogers and Jane Addams Middle Schools! The Challenge is calling on student innovators to take on a new adventure, aptly named "Submerged." Teams of students will dive deep into real-world issues affecting our underwater environments, from pollution to wildlife conservation, using their curiosity and creativity to help solve some of today’s most pressing challenges.
