Regular Class Modification

The regular class teacher may modify the educational program to meet the student's needs. These modifications are usually the result of consultations with the parents, school psychologist, a special education teacher, and/or other members of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team.

Regular Class with Related Services
A student in general education may qualify for related services.  These services are made available in small group or individual settings during the regular school day.  Related services include Speech and Language (for communication needs), Adapted Physical Education (for gross motor skills), Occupational Therapy (for fine motor skills and sensory needs), and Physical Therapy (for physically accessing the educational environment).

Itinerant Teacher for the Hearing and Visually Impaired

Some hearing impaired and visually-impaired students attend regular classes with an itinerant teacher providing support services according to the child's needs as determined in the IEP.  These services are provided for the Lawndale Elementary School District by the Southwest SELPA.

Learning Center Program

Educational Specialists provide instruction and services for those students whose needs have been identified in an IEP and who are assigned to the regular classroom for part of the school day. The Learning Center Program may serve students representing a variety of handicapping conditions whose educational needs can be appropriately addressed within this part-time setting.

Special Day Class (SDC)
Special Day classes are situated on comprehensive campuses and are designed to meet the specific educational needs of students with learning, language, and adaptive skills needs. A students placed in one of these self-contained settings may be mainstreamed for one or more regular classes as appropriate. Our Special Day Class programs include SDC Autism, SDC Life Skills and SDC Middle School STAAR (Student Tailored Academic and Adaptive Readiness) Program. Key Academic Components

By Design, the Common Core Essential Elements focus on student learning to create comparable expectations for students with significant cognitive disabilities. The Essential Elements use performance terms to describe what students should know and be able to do and provide learning targets for students with significant cognitive challenges. “The Common Core Essential Elements are specific statements of knowledge and skills linked to the grade-level expectations identified in the Common Core State Standards. The purpose of the Essential Elements is to build a bridge from the content in the Common Core State Standards to academic expectations for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities” (Dynamic Learning Maps Consortium, 2013). For more detailed information on the essential elements, please refer to the links below:
