Volunteers

Complete the TB Risk Assessment, Volunteer Application, Mandated Training, and Live Scan if applicable. All required documents must be submitted before volunteering (See list of requirements above).

To begin the volunteer process:

2. Complete the Volunteer Application, TB Test, Immunizations, and all applicable requirements based on your learning site's agreement with the district.

Depending on the nature of your volunteer assignment, you may be scheduled for Live Scan fingerprinting (EC §45125).

Yes, returning volunteers shall submit the returning volunteer application.

The annual returning volunteer application ensures the District has updated information, maintains accurate volunteer records, and confirms that volunteers continue to meet current safety requirements. This process helps support a safe learning environment for all students and staff.

This process also allows our district to identify who needs Mandated Reporter Training.

Beginning July 1, 2026, California law (Senate Bill 848; California Penal Code § 11165.7 and Education Code § 44691) expands mandated reporter and child abuse prevention training requirements for schools by extending training requirements to applicable individuals, including certain school volunteers. To support student safety, the District requires all volunteers who regularly provide service on campus or have ongoing interaction with students to complete this training as a condition of volunteering. This training ensures volunteers understand how to recognize and report suspected child abuse or neglect.

The mandated training will be assigned by your site once you submit the new or returning volunteer application. It may take at least a week for the training to be assigned.

Yes, just like staff, volunteers who have contact with students are required to complete the Mandated Reporter Training every year.

Volunteers who have completed Mandated Reporter Training this year through another school district or educational institution may submit their certificate of completion to their Community Liaison, who will then forward it to HR. The certificate will be forwarded to ASCIP for review to determine whether the training is equivalent to and meets the District’s requirements.

If the training is determined to be equivalent, the volunteer will be notified and may proceed to the next step of the volunteer process, if applicable. If the training is not considered equivalent, the volunteer will be instructed to complete the District’s required training.

Please note that it may take several days for ASCIP to review the certificate and provide a determination. The training must also have been completed this year (2026).

Live Scan is a system for the electronic submission of fingerprints to the California Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation (if required). Fingerprints are digitized through an electronic process (Live Scan), enabling the secure electronic transfer of the fingerprint image data, in combination with personal descriptor information, to central computers at the Department of Justice.

Live Scan is conducted at the Lawndale Elementary School District Office in the Human Resources Department by referral from the Community Liaison only after all volunteer requirements have been met. All records associated with Live Scan, including criminal offender records, are maintained by the Human Resources department in accordance with district regulations.

Volunteers who take on the considerable responsibility of working with students are fingerprinted (EC §45125).

After you complete the Live Scan process, your fingerprints will be transmitted to the Department of Justice. Typically, results are received within 72 hours, but can take up to 30+ days if there are any delays. Delays occur for many reasons and require manual intervention from the Department of Justice, which takes time.

Once results are received and reviewed, the department or school site will be notified of your clearance status.

Not everyone with a criminal record is excluded from volunteering. Each situation is reviewed confidentially on a case-by-case basis in accordance with Board Policy and applicable state and federal laws. Prospective volunteers must disclose all prior criminal convictions, excluding minor traffic violations.

Your fingerprints will be submitted to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for clearance. Fingerprint information will only be used for the purpose of determining your eligibility to volunteer and help ensure the safety of our students. Your fingerprint records will not be used for any other purpose or shared with any other agency, except as required by law.

Yes. Each agency must Live Scan (fingerprint) individually.

In accordance with Health and Safety Code §121545, volunteers must show proof of a negative Tuberculosis screening prior to volunteering.

Volunteers can get a traditional PPD test or complete a TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire (PDF) (must be signed by a medical professional).

Please contact your medical provider or visit one of Providence's free sites through the Partners for Healthy Kids Mobile Clinic (See Monthly Calendar). Free TB Assessment will also be available through Providence in September at the annual LESD Volunteer Fair.

You just need to complete the application and submit all the required forms once. If you would like to volunteer at another site, please inform your Community Liaison.

Yes, all volunteers go through the same process. Depending on the volunteer assignment, you may be referred for fingerprint clearance by the Community Liaison.
